Major challenges and obstacles facing digital repositories in the digital era

In light of the technological and digital revolution and heavy dependence on digital resources, digital data saving has become a vital means that helps to keep and save intellectual productions. In fact, the digital repositories are one of the most important devices and records that contribute to the perpetuation of intellectual and scientific life. This paper aimed at shedding light on the challenges facing digital repositories, especially in light of the immense and continuous increase of data. It tries to identify those challenges and determine the solutions that can contribute to face them.
The lack of independent and detailed studies that tackled the challenges and focused on practical solutions was the reason behind conducting this paper. It targets collecting the related intellectual production and identifying the shortcomings and what is needed to be studied in the future, especially in light of big data and its impact on the continuity and development of digital repositories.
The survey methodology was used to gather studies and related literature and thus generalize the benefit and try to propose solutions. 15 Arab and foreign studies were covered which is estimated to contribute to achieving the goal of identifying the challenges facing digital repositories.
After reviewing Arab and foreign related literature and studies, the main results that came out of this paper, especially in light of the huge data, focused on the following challenges of digital repositories: intellectual property rights, the lack of qualified staff for content management, and huge budgets. A number of studies have suggested an approach to utilize modern technology and cloud computing to solve storage and saving problems. Others, however, considered cloud computing itself as one of the challenges of digital repositories. Some studies have emphasized the need to define a unified global policy for building digital repositories in light of Data ever-growing enormous size and the information and technical revolution, since the ultimate challenge was not due to technical and infrastructure problems.
This paper recommended the necessity of conducting specialized studies in finding applicable solutions to address the challenges and the optimal use of fuzzy logic and artificial intelligence techniques, the reduction of the dependence on the human component, and the reduction of the budgets of the salaries and training of employees to make them restricted only to building a strong infrastructure.

Cloud repositories and their role in enriching Arab intellectual production

Access to knowledge is an essential requirement for all aspects of human development. The technological development of information and the bursting of data and information across the Internet have led to the emergence of the importance of cloud computing and digital repositories that work to save data and information in all its different forms using computers and networks. This rapid development not only affected the size of data and information and methods of archiving, but also led to the emergence of different types of repositories. Thus, and in view of the importance of the subject of technologies for storing large digital data, this paper aims at achieving a major goal which is to enrich the specialized Arab intellectual production within the emergence of cloud repositories and the related concepts. Moreover, the paper seeks to achieve an important sub goal that is to identify the concepts of digital library, digital repository and institutional repository and highlight their goals, advantages and challenges and the most prominent digital repository systems. This is achieved through answering the study question that deals with the knowledge of cloud repositories and related terms and how important they are to institutions and individuals. The study depends on the critical and theoretical review and analysis of intellectual production. The researcher followed the documentary review method and content analysis to follow terms such as digital library, digital repository, institutional repository and digital repository systems.
The paper came out with several results through a review of intellectual production in this field including:
▪ The existence of an expulsive relationship between the availability of business and its ease of access and the frequency of quotes for scientific research.
▪ The existence of an institutional repository that encourages the institution employees to enrich the repository and raise the shares of the parent institution.
▪ The design of the repository portal has great importance especially if it is user friendly.
The researcher concluded that there is a need to consider all society sections and to work to establish a repository that serves people with special needs through investment in technology since we live in an era of technology and information. The study recommends the necessity to enrich intellectual production by creating cloud repositories that serve the category of the people with special needs. In addition, the study stresses the need to create a cloud repository for every university, government institution, and sector accompanied with policies to provide access as we live in an era of big data and digital transformation.

The role of institutional repositories in disseminating and managing knowledge: A Survey Study

This study is entitled: The Role of Institutional Repositories in Disseminating and Managing Knowledge. Addressing repositories has already become a pressing issue due to the rapid advancements that have impacted businesses, organization and institutions as knowledge is an economic and developmental pillar. Moreover, the value of having, managing, controlling its dissemination and facilitating is seen as the capital of each and every institution.
Digital institutional repositories constitute one of the key digital elements of knowledge management and dissemination. Furthermore, they are among the crucial pillars for scientific communication among researchers and the institution; that is, the intellectual output is one of the principal resources where synergistic relations among sources of information are evident. It is, therefore, essential to implement appropriate policies and strategies for guaranteeing free access to information.
This piece of research seeks to explore the definition of institutional repository, its merits, along with examining the potential utilization of it for disseminating and managing knowledge. Moreover, it highlights developments that have assisted with formulating the current institutional repositories along with providing a synopsis about the models of employing institutional repositories in international institutions and universities. In addition, it sheds light on the academic institutional repository and its role in enriching scientific research and the intellectual output of universities and identifying to the discrepancies between the repositories of learning objects and academic institutional repositories.
Finally, novel intellectual perceptions of next-generation repositories will be provided. The survey approach has been used adopted to collect data and information from literature and relevant studies with regard with the role of institutional repositories, and analyzing findings obtained through this literature.
Among the study findings is to demonstrate the crucial role being played by institutional repositories in realizing knowledge management processes, namely knowledge acquisition, storage, dissemination and sharing, whose achievement contributes to leveraging the competitive advantage of the institution. The number of institutional repositories has increased steadily in the world, reaching approximately 5,330 institutional repositories so far. This demonstrates a sense of awareness of the role and functions of the institutional repository. In addition to the study's findings, Arab intellectual production has been found poor in terms of institutional repositories. This necessitates paying more attention by researchers and academics for enriching Arabic content via investigating the significance of institutional repositories and the role they perform.

Social skills training

As many as one-fifth of school-age children have, or are at risk of having, emotional and behavioral disorders, which cause academic, social, and behavioral difficulties and prevent them from having authentic and healthy relationships with peers and adults. By assessing students’ social skills deficits, teachers and school personnel can develop a plan to teach the missing skills and replacement behaviors the students need. Many methods have been found to facilitate social skills learning, including direct and explicit instruction, social and emotional learning programs, and integration of social skills training into academic content lessons. Efforts made to teach emotional and behavioral skills impact not only their social and academic lives as students but, more importantly, their futures as adults. Without these critical skills, students will transition into adulthood with the same emotional/behavioral struggles, for example, ineffective communication, impulsive decision-making, inability to attain goals, and failure to protect themselves. Students with emotional and behavior disorders who gain these skill sets and replace their maladaptive patterns of behavior have a higher probability of achieving relational and vocational success as adults.

Mechanisms and methods used in the management and evaluation of digital repositories

The study aimed at identifying the mechanisms and methods used in the management and evaluation of digital repositories. And to know about the methods and polices of managing digital repositories and the criteria for evaluating digital repositories. The study used the descriptive analytical approach. And the study lies in the need to evaluate and manage digital repositories and its significance to develop criteria for this assessment and then to identify them. The study has found out several findings, the most important of them are there are criteria and methods used in evaluation of digital repositories in the Arab world. But they are differ in their elements and some of them are qualitative and other are quantitative and some of them are depend on the number of users and the items in the digital repositories. Also, some of them have adopted consensus, security, conservation, and availability requirements. And the others focused on content management, metadata management, publishing and statistical reports. The last ones of them focused on coverage, research, policies, services, preservation, deposition, information regulation, access mechanisms and software. In addition, the study showed that there are mechanisms and methods for managing digital repositories such as deposition policies, content regulation policy, IP policy, access control, retrieval policy and file naming service. And they used of specific types of systems and software in digital repositories, the most important of them is Dspace. The study also suggested a set of recommendations, the most important of them are the need to establish integrated standards in the Arab world for the evaluation and management of digital repositories. It is necessary to use digital repositories in government and private sectors for their benefits in helping knowledge management. Also, it is necessary to adopt an Arab project under an entity specializing in digital repositories field that serve knowledge. In addition to the various suggested studies in the field of digital repositories to cover all their areas in order to detect the strengths and the weakness of the digital repositories in order to get red of the weaknesses and to enforce strengths.
